Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path was difficult to follow. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine, no theatre jobs came her way. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a steady actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She took classes in drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
